The constant bombardment of negative information can, sometimes, make it difficult to see the importance of our conservation efforts.
Lets see what can be accomplished with a couple of changes in the jobs that are done around the kitchen sink.

Use a bowl of water when cleaning vegetables rather than always running the faucet. Water can later be recycled for use with outdoor plants. We frequently use the water again by rinsing out the coffeepot for watering outdoor plants. Rich in nitrogen as well as some trace minerals, coffeepots should be diluted with water before using. Select a varied number of plants each day and you might figure out that there is no longer a need to water or put fertilizer on them too frequently. Water used in the cooking of things like pasta, vegetables etc. Let it cool first then it can be used in the same way. The extra nutrients present in all of these water sources will help your garden to flourish. Getting rid of weeds is as easy as pouring extremely hot water around the roots of it.

After you have eaten your meal empty your dishes into a composting bucket before you wash them. While rinsing, place other soiled dishes, jars and utensils underneath while you work; it will begin the presoaking process – reducing labor and water use. You can put anything you catch from the sink strainer into the compost bin as well.

Getting the dishes done in just a little bit of soapy hot water will save you about 5 gallons on a regular basis. This may seema strange thing to do, but having the hot water on whilst you rinse the dishes will raise the water level and keep the water warm. By saving the water already used, another sink full is not necessary.
Sometimes we use the left over rinse water to pre-soak dishes also.

In the winter, the water from washing or soaking dishes should be left to cool. Doing this puts heat into your residence rather than the warmth going down the drain with the water. If your dishwasher isn’t built in, use the water to rinse the dirtiest dishes at the start since they drain out into your sink. Warm water trapped in the sink or a soiled pot can slowly release heat into the room, saving energy costs in the winter. Obviously it’s an opposite case in the summer months when you don’t require heat.

You don’t always require piping hot water for cleaning dishes. Usually, by the time we are finished washing our hands, the water is just beginning to warm up – so really, all we have done is heat up our pipes. It is simple to save water – for instance, by turning it off during the time you are soaping up your hands. It’s only necassary to run water in the first wetting and then for rinsing because running the water in between those times is really a waste.

If you measured the amount of water saved each day by those simple methods we just described, you would see that there would be dozens of gallons of pure, drinkable water left untouched in the reservoir. By reducing hot water consumption, our energy bills are a little bit smaller. All of this, coming from the sink in the kitchen only, nowhere else!

An important gadget for warm water is a water heater. Have a look on my site where I deal with RV Hot Water Heater or Bosch Water Heater
