It is an old adage, but still true, that a company is only as good as the least of their workers. And unfortunately, poor and inexperienced workers, are one of the characteristics frequently found in moving companies located through Internet advertising. Moving is an art. Even the three week course given to employees in large companies doesn’t fully prepare them to move the variety of delicate and unusual items found in people’s homes. Here is a story taken from the website of a prominent anti scam moving site that shows up moving company employees at their worst.
” After arriving 4.5 hours late, Jason’s partner, Michael, suggested that for an additional $15 per hour they could get an additional person to the location to make the move “more efficient”. I declined to pay anymore money than initially quoted. Michael then refused to load my belongings for fear that his fees would not be paid due to poor service. He left my belongings in a 1/2 loaded elevator, climbed the back fence and left.”
The account doesn’t tell us about the worker he would have hired for $15.00 and hour. But stories abound of second rate moving companies hiring pickup workers to help load and unload trucks. I suppose the enthusiastic pickup workers try to imitate movers they have seen in the past. But there are so many details about the handling of fragile items, the ways to pack items so they won’t slip around, that it comes as no surprise that employing pickup workers leads to serious damage of belongings, in many moves.
The moving help were not the only inexperienced workers. The account goes on to detail how inexperienced the driver was:
” The driver (a woman) who had accompanied Michael, was nearly in tears, apologized, said it was her first day on the job, that she had never been so embarrassed, that the day had consisted of such goings on at each location.”
So all in all, this rouge moving company showed up with a less than adequate truck, (not detailed), an inexperienced driver and an offer to hire a pickup worker.
As one person on the moving scam forum noted, in Vancouver, McDonalds pays their help more than moving companies pay their drivers, and that may help to explain the lack of experience in the driver. The same owner who sent out the truck in the above story, also put up this ad in a local Craig’s list:
“I am tired of guys not showing up! got stood up again this morning! You must be reliable or do not waste my time and yours, you must be clean and have valid drivers license, no druggies and or alcoholics please! You must know how to load a truck….
work today, call m.:778-238-6777… I have clean trucks and expect you to be clean,
If you are reliable and clean I will put you on top of the list as I am looking for reliable people only, thank you. * Location: Vancouver…..cash”
Before you consider hiring a moving company that you found on Craig’s list or the Internet, and which offer’s you a moving cost estimate, consider the kind of people who may be driving the vehicle that contains all of your life’s possessions.
